Most AirPods pair with an iPhone through Apple’s nearby setup card. The exact button or pairing control differs among AirPods models, but the connection is ultimately stored in Bluetooth and associated with your Apple Account.
Quick steps
- Unlock the iPhone and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Place the AirPods in pairing mode near the iPhone.
- For AirPods in a case, open the case near the phone.
- Tap Connect when the setup card appears.
- Follow any feature prompts and play audio to test the connection.
AirPods Max use a different physical setup
AirPods Max do not use the same charging-case procedure as AirPods earbuds. If they do not appear automatically, use their noise-control/pairing behavior and check Settings > Bluetooth for the headphones.
If the setup card never appears
Charge the AirPods, move them close to the unlocked iPhone, and check Bluetooth. If they are actively connected to another nearby device, disconnecting that device can help. You can also select the AirPods manually from Bluetooth settings when they are discoverable.
Apple Account syncing
Once AirPods are associated with your Apple Account, compatible Apple devices signed in to that account can recognize them. That is why you often do not need to perform a completely new pairing on every iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
When to reset AirPods
A reset is more disruptive than a simple reconnect and should usually come after charging, Bluetooth checks, and forgetting/reconnecting the device. Use the reset procedure for your exact AirPods model because the controls differ.
One more detail worth knowing
AirPods Max normally connect to an iPhone through Apple's onscreen setup process. If the setup animation does not appear, you can put the headphones into pairing mode and connect them from Bluetooth settings. Connect AirPods Max Automatically Unlock the iPhone and go to the Home Screen.
How to confirm the change
After you finish pair/connect airpods, repeat the action that originally brought you to this guide. Check the visible setting or real-world result rather than assuming the change took effect. If the result differs from the steps above, return to the relevant menu and look for a carrier, account, device, or app-specific control before changing unrelated iPhone settings.
Pair AirPods automatically
Unlock the iPhone, go to the Home Screen, and open the AirPods case near the phone with the AirPods inside. Follow the setup card when it appears. AirPods associated with your Apple Account can also become available on other compatible Apple devices signed in to that account.
Pair manually if the setup card does not appear
Open Settings > Bluetooth and put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control appropriate for the case model. Select the AirPods when they appear. If they never show up, charge the case and AirPods, turn Bluetooth off and back on, and reset the AirPods if necessary.
