Lock the iPhone immediately

- Choose the amount of idle time you want before the display locks.

Why Auto-Lock may be grayed out
Low Power Mode can affect the Auto-Lock setting and may force a shorter interval. Turn off Low Power Mode temporarily if you need to change the setting. Work or school management policies can also restrict lock timing.
Auto-Lock controls when the display turns off after inactivity. Passcode settings control device authentication and can include separate rules about when a passcode is required. Face ID or Touch ID can make frequent locking less inconvenient without removing passcode protection.
Use attention-aware features when available
Some Face ID iPhones can detect attention and avoid dimming or locking in certain situations while you are looking at the display. If the screen behavior seems inconsistent with your Auto-Lock choice, review the attention-aware settings supported by your model.
Choosing an Auto-Lock time
Thirty seconds or one minute works well when security and battery life matter most. A longer interval can be more comfortable for recipes, sheet music, presentations, or instructions that you read without touching the screen. Choose the shortest interval that does not interfere with how you normally use the phone.
Auto-Lock does not end every background task
Locking the display does not necessarily stop music, navigation, downloads, calls, or other activities that are designed to continue in the background. It mainly turns off the display and returns the phone to its locked security state.
