Whether a deleted iPhone photo can be recovered depends on where it is in the deletion process. Photos normally stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. If a photo has already been permanently removed from Recently Deleted, Apple does not provide a button that restores that same item from iCloud Photos.
Check Recently Deleted First
Open Photos, tap Collections, and find Recently Deleted under Utilities. Tap View Album and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Select the photo or video and tap Recover.
Recovered items return to your photo library. If you use iCloud Photos, deletion and recovery can synchronize across devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
What “Permanently Deleted” Means
Items in Recently Deleted are kept for about 30 days. If you manually delete an item from that collection or the retention period expires, Apple considers it permanently deleted. When iCloud Photos was storing the item, permanently deleting it also removes it from the synced iCloud photo library.
Check Other Places Where a Copy Might Exist
A permanently deleted photo may still exist somewhere else if you previously made a separate copy. Check a Mac or PC where you manually imported photos, another cloud service you intentionally used, shared albums or messages where you sent the image, external storage, or a family member’s independent copy.
Do not assume another Apple device will preserve a deleted iCloud Photos item merely because it was offline for a while. Once that device reconnects and syncs, iCloud changes can propagate.
Can an iPhone Backup Restore the Photo?
This depends on how your photos were stored and when the backup was made. Restoring an entire iPhone from a backup is a major operation and is not a guaranteed way to recover a photo that was synchronized through iCloud Photos. Before erasing a working phone to test an old backup, confirm what the backup actually contains and protect your current data.
Be Careful with “Guaranteed Recovery” Apps
Apps and services sometimes advertise guaranteed recovery of permanently deleted iPhone photos. Modern iPhone storage and encryption make those promises unreliable, especially after the photo has been removed from Recently Deleted and synchronized deletion has completed. Do not hand over Apple Account credentials to an unknown recovery service.
