If you deleted a text conversation on an iPhone, check Recently Deleted in Messages first. Apple allows eligible deleted messages to be recovered there for up to 30 days. Permanently deleting them from Recently Deleted cannot be undone through the built-in Messages recovery feature.
Recover texts from Recently Deleted
Open Messages, tap the control that displays filters or conversation categories, then open Recently Deleted. Select the conversation you want and choose Recover. If Messages in iCloud is enabled, recovery synchronizes to your other devices using the same Apple Account.
Understand the 30-day recovery window
Recently Deleted is the supported undelete location. Messages that age out or are manually permanently deleted are no longer available through that folder. Undo Send is different: a message removed with Undo Send is permanently deleted rather than placed in Recently Deleted.
Do not assume an old backup guarantees recovery
A backup created before deletion can matter in some recovery situations, but it is not a guaranteed archive of every text. Messages in iCloud synchronizes message history separately, and deleting a message can synchronize across devices. Restoring an older device backup can also replace newer local data, so it should not be presented as a casual first step for retrieving one conversation.
Current computer tools are Finder and Apple Devices
If a legitimate restore is necessary for broader device recovery, current Macs use Finder and current Windows PCs use Apple Devices. Older iTunes instructions apply only to legacy systems. Before restoring anything, verify the backup date and understand what current data may be replaced.
Be skeptical of guaranteed third-party recovery
Do not assume that a utility can always recover a permanently deleted iPhone message. Modern iPhone storage and encryption make simple undelete claims unreliable. Avoid giving an unknown recovery program your Apple Account password, verification codes, or other sensitive credentials.
Look for other legitimate copies
A recipient may still have the conversation, an attachment may have been saved to Photos or Files, or a business may retain its own transaction record. Those sources can help recover the information you need, but they are separate copies rather than recovery of the permanently deleted iPhone message itself.
Messages in iCloud changes what a backup means
When Messages in iCloud is enabled, message history synchronizes through iCloud across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deleting a message on one synchronized device can therefore affect the others. A device backup should not be described as a separate permanent archive of synchronized messages, so check how Messages is configured before assuming an older backup contains an untouched copy.
